These products can work, but they have serious side effects.

Many of them pose a health risk, even if the person cleaning the shower curtains is wearing gloves. The best way to wash mildew stains off plastic shower curtains is by taking them off the curtain rods and heading for the laundry room.

Cleaning Safety

When cleaning shower curtains, it is important to open a window and wear gloves.  The reason why the curtains are not left in the bathroom when cleaning is to remove any chance that the caustic cleaners will leave a residue that might irritate people's skin when bathing.

I wash mildew stains off plastic shower curtains with a strong cleaner, which contains an agent that prevents its re-growth.  Mildew is a plant. It is a living thing.

Launderable shower curtains make the job easier, but it is important to rinse the washing machine after cleaning the shower curtains.

Bleach cleaners are effective when cleaning shower curtains, but they have some draw backs.  In many cases, the cleaner is washed off the shower curtains when the black is gone.

This does not mean the mildew spores are dead.  Launderable shower curtains are a little safer because they remain in the washing machine and cleaner for 20 minutes.

When I wash mildew off plastic shower curtains, I always leave the cleaner on the shower curtains for at least 15 minutes.  It is important to remember that bleaches must remain on the surface, wet, for ten minutes.

Kill Germs

If the bleach is rinsed off, or allowed to dry, it will not kill all the germs, and possibly leave the mildew spores alive.

Once finished cleaning shower curtains or washing launderable shower curtains it is important to remember that the spores might be alive. This is why it is best to rinse the shower curtains.

Home decorating shows suggest that a vinegar rinse or a baking soda rinse might help.  It all depends on the variety of mildew growing on the shower curtains.

Once finished cleaning shower curtains and washing launderable shower curtains the next step is to create an environment where mildew and molds will not grow.  This will reduce the number of hours spent cleaning shower curtains.

Mildew and mode grows in hot, humid, low light areas.  This is why it grows in the lower folds of shower curtains.  Leaving a light on for fifteen minutes after a shower, and shaking out the bottom of the shower curtains to remove excess water is a good start.

Mildew eats body oils and soap scum.  Removing these elements weekly with a stiff brush will dramatically reduce the oils and soap scum.

Professional house cleaners use a squeegee on the bathroom walls.  These work excellently.  They remove everything from the walls and shower curtains leaving nothing for the mold and mildew to grow on.
